070112 UE Readings in the History of Historiography (2024S)

The course shall be taught in English.
During the centuries of their history, the lands that currently constitute the territory of Ukraine have experienced a number of political regimes, foreign rules and international developments that have made an influence on the whole region of the Eastern Europe. This course shall be focused on the works of both native-born and foreign scholars studying the territories of Ukrainian lands, its population composed of various socio-ethnic groups and various social and political structures existing there, starting with the excerpts from “The Histories” by Herodotus.
This course shall provide examples of historiography from different epochs and directions of historiography history (Antiquity, Middle Ages, Enlightenment, Marxism, Diaspora historiography, Women and Gender history, Global History etc.), either in form of original sources or research of different groups of texts on the topic of a corresponding teaching unit. After completing the course, the students should obtain knowledge of the most important texts, themes and epochs of historiographical history related to the history of Ukrainian lands and to be able to read and analyze historiographical texts in order to recognize historical questions and narratives. To fulfill these goals, the students shall be provided with the relevant research literature and/or written sources arranged both thematically and in chronological order. The students will be requested to submit 4 short summaries of the texts of their choice in preparation to the class. In addition, the students shall be asked to present the historical context of literature assigned for each teaching unit in small groups (2-3 students) and to moderate the in-class discussion of the text itself after their presentation.
