Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This Proseminar explores points of ideological and institutional intersection in the Habsburg and Austrian past in the context of a new historiography of internationalism and studies of the League of Nations. Drawing from the expanding historiography of international ideas and institutions, on the one hand, and the uncollected evidence of people and politics of the Habsburg empire, on the other, its intention is to gauge the political, cultural, and economic significance of strands of the ‘new internationalism’ in the history of the Habsburg empire, and its afterlife.
The aim of the seminar is to provide students with basic knowledge of the key topics of the period, while introducing them to a more specific field of knowledge production and governance. They will be guided through the main secondary and primary sources, and the methodological issues related to them. The first half of the semester will be dedicated to a general introduction (the new internationalism of the 19th century, pacifist-, internationalist- and feminist movements, Völkerbundliga). This should help the students to define their own questioning, which they will present in class during the second half of the semester. The oral presentation and the ensuing discussion will provide the basis of the PS-work.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The aim of the seminar is to learn to formulate a scientific work based on a historical topic. Students will choose a topic they will progressively elaborate along the semester. They will research primary sources as well as secondary literature, and learn how the exploit them. During the semester, they will have to present in 10-15 minutes a preliminary analysis of their reflection and sources, that will be discussed together with the other students. These oral presentations will be the basis of the PS-work (Seminararbeit).
Students are expected to read all the assigned texts before each class, and to actively contribute to class discussion.

Assessment will be based on:
- the active participation to the class and the discussions
- the oral presentation and the final PS-work

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Good reading knowledge of both English and German are required (for Erasmus students without sufficient knowledge of German, substitute texts in English will be provided).
Regular attendance (maximum 2 x unexcused absences), in contrary case extra assignments are due.

The evaluation is based on oral participation in class (20%), the oral presentation of a first draft (20%) and the final paper (60%). The PS-work should be approx. 15 pages long: 40.000 (± 5%) signs including spaces, footnotes, title page, table of content and bibliography.
