The development of a commercial economy is one of the key features of European history in the Middle Ages. It led to self-sustained growth and made this continent expansive. Central questions to be discussed are the impact of long-distance trade since the early and central middle ages, growth of the agrarian production by intensive management and/or by market incentives, the concept of ‘commercial revolution’ (Roberto Lopez), the penetration of market structures in society, the shifts in trading methods and routes, and the emergence of commercial capitalism.
Target: insight in the emergence of self-sustained growth in an agrarian society, and its linkages with societies with a different development.
