Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This is a seminar for students interested into current research of individual differences in aptitude/ability of second / multiple language acquisition up to hyperpoliglottism. The seminar will concentrate on all aspects of language aptitude from an interdisciplinary perspective (classical SLA concepts, aptitude testing, psychology of language learning/aptitude, psycholinguistics, cognitive neuroscience), backed up by practical insights into this topic by own research (of lecturer and mini-research of students) on differences between high and low aptitude second language learners.

project presentations, all-class discussions of project presentations, group discussions, final paper (active participation during class is assessed as well).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

This course aims at introducing the participants to the subfield of SLA-research aptitude research with special focus on neuro- and psycholinguistic aspects, providing practical background information and insights into the nature of research on language aptitude as well as familiarizing with recent and ongoing research in the field and the tools used. A further aim of this course is to sensitize participants towards the importance of individual differences in language aptitude for the teaching of foreign languages and the implications for language teaching and language education. The course should be highly interactive with students elaborating own topics and reporting/discussing them in class.
