Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Students are required to
1. attend classes, do the compulsory reading using the PQ4R technique (the technique will be presented and explained in the first session) and be prepared for class as well as participate in the discussions. This counts for 5 % of the final grade.
2. hand in the PQ4R tasks twice per term (to be uploaded on moodle). This counts for 20 % of the final grade.
3. deliver one short presentation (as a group or individually – depending on the number of course participants) related to the required reading of the respective class unit and triggering as well as moderating the discussion within class. This counts for 20 % of the final grade.
4. give an oral summary of the reading covered and issues raised in the class unit in the week before, elaborating on the relevance of the topic and issues as well as relating those to the reading and subject of the current course unit (to be done by each student once per term, as a group or individually, depending on the number of course participants). This counts for 5 % of the final grade.
5. submit a term paper at the end of the term (2000 words, +/- 10 %) This counts for 50 % of the final grade. Deadline: 28th June 8:00 a.m.

Minimum Requirements and Evaluation
Students not attending the first class without notification as well as proof (e.g. doctor’s note) will be unsubscribed. Students are allowed to miss a maximum of two classes per term. For any further absences, with or without a valid excuse, additional assignments are required.If you want to drop the course, please do so after the first session to allow students from the waiting list to join. Please register via u:space within the registration period. Registration after that period is not possible.Students are required to submit ALL assignments on time and to respect the standards of good scientific practice as well as the given instructions in order to receive a positive grade. Turnitin will be used to check for potential plagiarism. To ensure good academic practice, the seminar leader may invite students to a short interview after submission of the seminar paper, which must be completed positively. Late assignments without an extension will be subject to an increasing deduction of points (1 per day on a 15-point scale).Grading scale:
88-100 Excellent (1)
75-87 Good (2)
63-74 Satisfactory (3)
51-62 Sufficient (4)

In this guided reading course, we will take a thorough look at EU institutions and actors, processes happening within and related to the EU as well as theories and concepts in order to carry out scientific analyses. We will also have a look at the Austrian political system and Austrian foreign policy.Methods:
• Reading of academic literature (using the ‘PQ4R’ technique)

• Discussions in different groups and formatsGoals:
After attending the course, carrying out all assignments conscientiously and participating in an active manner, students should be able to
• approach and read academic literature in a systematic and critical way
• describe and explain Austrian foreign policy
• describe and explain the workings of the EU’s institutions
• describe and explain the covered theories and concepts and
• use those for the analysis of current issues concerning e.g. EU policy-making or institutions
