Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Political parties are the main actors in politics. This course serves as an introduction to concepts and theories employed in the study of political parties. At the beginning of this course, we will talk about definitions of parties, followed by an introduction into party competition (i.e. electoral and party systems). We will also talk about the representational function of parties and how voters react to party behaviour. Do parties stick to their electoral promises and do voters notice? Finally, we will also analyse how voters perceive of parties and whether parties react to changing preferences of voters.

• Attendance and class participation (10 % of the final mark)
• Submit three meaningful questions for the required readings five times during the seminar (15 % of the final mark)
• Two discussion papers (25 % of the final mark)
• Research paper (50 % of the final mark)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Please note that this course is held in English. Students must be able and willing to read and understand academic literature in English and also be able to follow and take part in a discussion in English. Students also have to submit their coursework in English.
Students are not required to have previous knowledge of political parties. However, they should be familiar with or at least interested in quantitative methods since a majority of the texts that we will read in this seminar make use of quantitative methods.
Attendance is required in the first class and, overall, not more than two classes can be missed (‘prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung’).
