The course takes place at the Marine Biological Station of Piran, Slovenia from 13 to 24 May 2024.
Introductory information and a preliminary discussion will be held in the Seminar Room 3.1. (Djerassiplatz 1, 1030 Vienna) 6 March, 13:30 - 15:30.
Mandatory meeting.

There will be 3-4 more meeting dates before the field stay where the final group of students will plan and present their projects. These dates will be announced after the preliminary introduction.

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung


Groups of up to 4 students will work on a current topic on heterotrophic microbes and autotrophic (micro)organisms. This includes hands-on training on generally applied methods in the field on samples collected in the waters off Piran. The results of the individual research projects are to be presented as talk at the last day of the stay in Piran. Back in Vienna, the research will be summarized in a manuscript and structured as genuine scientific publication.
The overall goal is to obtain fundamental knowledge on how to accomplish a project, starting from planning the project, measurements in the field, data analyses up to the writing phase.

It is thus imperative that some basic knowledge on the marine environment is available.
Suggested lectures and practica are: Meereskunde, Microbial Oceanography, Biological Oceanography, Introduction to the fauna and flora of marine habitats

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Cooperation/activity during the course (30%), oral presentation of the research topic and data (20%), lab journal (10%), manuscript (40%)
All partial performances must be positive to finish the course.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Passed with more than 60% positive overall performance with a total of 100 points.
Grading: 91-100 = 1, 81-90 = 2, 71-80 = 3, 60-70 = 4, <60 = 5.
