Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The seminar explores the relationship between liturgical space and ecclesiastical art in churches of the Byzantine tradition (Eastern Orthodox and Greek Catholic Churches). It aims to demonstrate that the liturgical and artistic heritage of these churches remains alive today and manifests itself in different ways depending on the context. The seminar includes presentations by participants on fundamental topics related to the subject matter. The seminar also includes excursions to several churches in Vienna featuring cycles of wall paintings, as well as meetings with icon painters to discuss their approaches.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Reading the texts or materials uploaded to Moodle for the seminar sessions, regular active participation in the sessions,
a presentation supported by visual aids, followed by leading a discussion after the presentation,
a seminar paper (25,000 to 30,000 characters) in accordance with the faculty’s standard formatting requirements.
All work must be completed independently; this may be done in English or (by agreement with the entire group) in German. The use of AI (e.g., ChatGPT, Google Bard) is permitted (only) for auxiliary tasks (e.g., literature research, searching for definitions, creating working translations, proofreading).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Active participation: 20%; presentation: 20%; development of a research question for the seminar paper: 10%; completion of the seminar paper: 50%. The seminar paper will be subject to a software-based plagiarism check. In the event of suspected non-transparent use of AI (e.g., through citation or indication of the type of use), the course administration reserves the right to conduct a “grade-relevant discussion”/“plausibility check.”
Attendance is required for all sessions, though one unexcused absence is permitted.
The deadline for submitting the seminar paper is Febuary 26, 2027.
The final grade is calculated as the average of the weighted individual components, with each individual component requiring a passing grade.
