Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Aims:
• Discovering Vienna’s religious and cultural diversity in history and the present day
• Developing an awareness of the close relationship between religion and art in the context of Vienna
• Learning to read the city of Vienna as an aesthetic programme

Contents:
The city of Vienna can be interpreted as an aesthetic programme in terms of its cultural and religious richness. This programme can be characterised on the one hand by imperious representation and on the other by its constant subversive undermining and ironisation. In both instances it becomes evident that anyone approaching Vienna enters an aesthetically coded landscape. As the former capital of a multi-ethnic state and as a destination and transit point for migration movements, Vienna is, on the one hand, a religious and cultural mosaic and, on the other hand, has led to ever new blendings of different traditions, which have also given rise to something entirely new. Despite its loss of political and economic importance in the past century, the city of Vienna remains an important cultural centre of Europe.

Method:
Focus lies on close-reading, interpretation, and discussion of the primary texts. Instead of a traditional seminar essay, students have the opportunity to regularly write “reading reflections”, on which they receive feedback and which then can be made available to all seminar participants in a revised form on Moodle. The course is generally planned as on site and attendance is mandatory, but hybrid participation is possible. Accompanying the course, there will be a wide range of cultural events (theatre, concerts, exhibitions, city walk etc.) that can be attended together on a voluntary basis.

Be sure to register for courses via u:space and check u:find and the moodle platform for the latest information on current course status.
