Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course will enable students to understand the key concepts of international criminal law (ICL) as a branch of international law and its institutional framework. It will familiarize them with the contemporary ICL discourse, including divergent interpretations of legal questions and policy considerations.
Topics include the evolution and doctrinal foundation of ICL; the concept of individual criminal responsibility; genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, the crime of aggression; enforcement mechanisms on national and international levels, with a special emphasis on the International Criminal Court; transitional justice.
The course will be taught interactively, using a combination of lectures and class discussions.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Written exam and class participation.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Preparation and active class participation (30 percent); final written exam on Wednesday 19 January 2022 (70 percent).

Prüfungsstoff

Topics addressed in class, as reflected in slides and in the required readings.
