Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The lecture gives an overview of legal history inside and outside Europe. It will cover a vast area of topics, epochs and problems: from the very beginning of law and society in ancient times over the Middle Ages to early modern and contemporary history. It includes lectures about enlightenment and absolutism; constitutionalization, authoritarianism, and totalitarianism in the 19th and 20th century – as well as the attempts to prosecute crimes through international criminal law. It aims at a comparative and critical perspective on the history of law. Imperialism and colonialism also have their place here. The lectures end with the decolonization, Europeanization, and globalization of law in the post-World War II era and present times.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The course does not have an intrinsic examination character, but serves to prepare for the module examination of the same name.

In special cases (e.g. ERASMUS; students of other fields of study such as business law), an oral examination on the lecture material can be held; please contact one of us by e-mail.
