Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The objective of this course is to familiarize students with a broad range of theoretical and practical perspectives on the strategy and organization of international firms. It gives an overview of the theoretical approaches to facilitate the understanding of political, economical and cross-cultural impacts in managing international firms globally. The emphases are raised in 1) cross culture variables effecting negotiations and communications, 2) strategic market entry modes such as, direct and indirect export, licensing, strategic alliances (non-equity and equity arrangements), greenfield investments and mergers & acquisitions etc., 3) organizational structures and control systems fitting to different strategic stages, 4) global human resource management practices and, 5) corporate governance practical and theoretical underpinnings.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The course will be given primarily through lecture and class presentation of different cases. Each student is strongly encouraged to participate in class discussions. Classroom participation is an important part of evaluation. Generally, an analysis of the readings will be used to guide our discussion, but the format will be free-flowing and may vary considerably. A suggestion to read the assigned material from the reference books and articles, and to express opinions, comments, and insights relative to the discussion topic is to be made.

Participation in public lectures is an integral part of this course. In these lectures, experts from the relevant field of study hold discussion on the various topics/aspects relating to the global business. The participation/attendance during these lectures is mandatory for the completion of the course and constitutes 10% of the course evaluation. The distribution of grades will be based on the following:
0%-49%: nicht genügend 5
0%-62%: genügend
63%-74%: befriedigend
75%-87%: gut
88%-100%: sehr gut

Prüfungsstoff

This module will consist of lectures, case presentations and the final exam.

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The objective of this course is to familiarize students with a range of theoretical perspectives on the strategy and organization of international firms and practice their application to the real-life cases of the global companies originating in Austria and beyond. In particular, the course provides the participants with an overview of three theoretical approaches – Industrial organization, Resource-based and Institutional theory – and consequently uses these perspectives for analyzing the strategic decisions faced by the multinational enterprises (MNEs).
The main topics focus on the analysis of the business-level and corporate-level strategies of the MNEs and their organizational structures. Together with the initial overview of the global environment and final lecture devoted to the issues of corporate social responsibility (SCR,) the structure of this course allows to build a comprehensive picture of a modern MNE, seen through the theoretical prisms of leading theories in the field.
The course is organized primarily in form of the lectures, accompanied by several in-class assignments and in-class presentation of the case studies.
Participants are strongly encouraged to share their opinions during lectures and discussions, with classroom participation being an important part of evaluation.
Most of the assignments are expected to be completed in teams, which are going to be formed in the beginning of the course.
The exam is conducted at the end of the course and consists of four to five open-end questions, covering the main topics learned in the course.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The course compound grading system consists of the following parts:
• Class participation and in class assignments 15%
• Case Study assignment (writing and presenting the case) 35%
• Final Exam 50%.

Closed-books policy applies throughout the exam. Participants are required to to earn at least 50% of the maximum points assigned to the final exam (25 out of 50) in order to pass the course.
Participants are also encouraged to take part in the public lectures, organized at the faculty (for the schedule please refer to at https://im.univie.ac.at/windsperger/im-public-lectures/?no_cache=1). In these lectures, top professionals from multiple internationally active companies present and discuss with the audience various topics relevant for the global business. The attendance and participation in these lectures is voluntary and rewarded with a bonus of 10% added in case of the attendance of at least 75% of the lectures announced in the respective semester.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The minimum requirement for participation is 75% of the classes held in the respective semester.
The minimum requirement for the exam is 50% of the maximum grade assigned to the exam.
The distribution of grades will be based on the following:
0%-50%: failed the course (5)
51%-62%: enough to pass (4)
63%-74%: satisfactory (3)
75%-87%: good (2)
88%-100%: very good (1)

Prüfungsstoff

The exam questions cover such topics as:
• Globalization and the role of international firm
• Business-level strategy of international firms
• Corporate level strategy of international firms
• Organizational structure of international firms
• Corporate Social Responsibility in international firms

By the time of completion of the course the participants are expected to be able to discuss the topics outlined above, through the prism of the main theoretical concepts introduced within the course. They also should be able to demonstrate the ability to apply the theoretical knowledge to the analysis of the real-life situations.
The exam questions include direct requests to illustrate the discussion of specific theoretical concepts with the examples learned through the preparation of the assigned case study and participation in the presentations of the colleagues.
