Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course covers some core ideas in macroeconomics, with a special focus on the long run. It relates different theories to relevant phenomena, empirical evidence, and policy issues, and puts emphasis on some mathematical methods used in the field, such as dynamic optimisation. Students taking this course will be able to rigorously analyse macroeconomic issues and policies in connection with economic growth, fiscal policy, and investment.

The course is taught on site.

Students lacking the background knowledge below are bound to face serious difficulties in the course. They are strongly advised to catch up with it as soon as possible.

Mathematics: systems of linear equations, derivatives and partial derivatives, rules of differentiation, unconstrained optimisation, optimisation with equality constraints

Macroeconomics: income, unemployment, money, inflation, national accounts, value added, GDP and its components, deflators, nominal and real variables

Microeconomics: utility maximisation, income and substitution effect, demand curve, demand elasticity, elasticity of substitution, profit maximisation, supply curve, cost minimisation, factor demand, perfect and imperfect competition (monopoly), general equilibrium

Probability/statistics: probability, conditional probability, random variable, expected value, variance and covariance

For macroeconomics and microeconomics, any standard undergraduate textbook covers the needed material. The link below suggests literature for mathematics and probability/statistics.

STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO TAKE THIS COURSE, KU APPLIED MACROECONOMICS 2, AND THE ASSOCIATED EXERCISE SESSION (UE APPLIED MACROECONOMICS) IN THE SAME SEMESTER.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Evaluation is based on a final exam that covers all the material discussed in the course.

For the exam, no materials (electronic devices, notes, books, etc.) are allowed.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Students need to obtain at least an average of 50% to pass this course. 50% - 59% implies a 4; 60% - 69% a 3; 70% - 84% a 2; 85% or above a 1.

Prüfungsstoff

All exams are based on the material covered in class as well as all mandatory readings and the problem sets handed out during the course.

Topics: Solow model, dynamic optimisation, overlapping generations model, Ramsey model, endogenous growth, fundamental causes of long-run growth, investment

Literatur

The course is mainly based on David Romer (2018): Advanced Macroeconomics, 5th Edition. A detailed reading list will be provided in the course’s Moodle platform at the beginning of the semester.
