Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Aims: The primary goal of this course is to familiarize students with a broad range of theoretical and practical perspectives on the strategy and structure of the global corporate firm. The course is concerned with the different strategy concepts and their applications to the multinational corporation (MNC). It will provide insights into how international businesses effectively operate in the global economy to achieve success. The course will begin with an overview of the international business grounded in the concept of globalisation. It will then examine the (internal and external) environment for international firms at both the micro and the macro level(s). The course will finally probe international firms: their entry modes into international enterprise and their structural and embeddedness issues.

Methods: The course will be organised following a lecture format characterising interactive discussions on the various aspects of global business. Students are expected to come prepared with the course material to be supplied through Moodle at beginning of the course. Students will write group assignment(s) that might be discussed/presented in the last of week of January.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Written Exam: There will be a comprehensive written exam. To assess the learning accumulated during class discussions. The exam. Will constitute of multiple choice questions, True/False questions and one essay question.
Case Study Assignment: Students will work in teams consisting of up to 3 students to conduct a case study. They will be assigned a comprehensive case encompassing the dynamics of global corporate strategy. They will analyze the case and would present their own assessment and solution(s) to the issues discussed in the case while making an appeal to the different theories/phenomena/concepts discussed/debated during the lectures.
Public Lectures: Public lectures are an integral part of this course. In these lectures, experts from the relevant field of study held discussion on the various topics/aspects relating to the global business. The participation/attendance during these lectures is strongly encouraged, with one bonus point (per public lecture) added to your aggregate score for participation in these lecturers. Group Assignment 30% 
Class participation 10% 
Minimum Requirements: For successful completion of the course, a student must secure at least 50% score in the written examination and 75% attendance in the course meetings.

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The goal of this course is to familiarize students with a broad range of theoretical and practical perspectives on the strategy & structure of the global corporate firm.

Specifically, this course is concerned with the different strategy concepts and their applications to the multinational corporation (MNC). In the first part, the models of Porter, Mintzberg, Rumelt, Miles & Snow, Miller & Friesen, Bartlett & Ghoshal and the resource-based view (Wernerfelt, Barney, Peteraf, Grant), the organizational capability framework of Teece and are discussed. In the second part, the major strategic options of the MNC, such as global vs. regional strategies, outsourcing and offshoring strategies, diversification strategies and diversification strategies and capital structure of MNCs are discussed.

The relevant articles are published on the elearning platform MOODLE under
“Literature for the DISCUSSION PAPER”!
Only if you submit all 6 summaries, you will get a POSITIVE evaluation of the course.
Deadline:
The summary must be handed in by February 12, 2108
The summary must be structured as follows:
1. Summary of the author’s arguments (2 pages);
2. Critique: Discuss the strength and weaknesses of the study (1-2 pages).

Please upload the summaries on Moodle as follows: Last name and number of summaries (for instance Meister1….Meister6)!

b. Active participation in the class (10).

c. Exam (60) – minimum 50 %!

d. BONUS POINTS (20):

(1) Case study presentation regarding topics 1 – 12 (15 minutes) (February 20, 2018) (10)

If you want to present a case study (1-3 persons for one presentation), you have to come to my office hours after you have already chosen a company. The power point presentations must be sent to me by February 15.
The case study has to apply the content of the topic which was presented in the course (including relevant literature).
The presentation should be structured as follows: 1. Overview of the company 2. Application of the conceptual framework presented in the course and/or in the relevant literature.
