Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The goal of this course is to familiarize students with a broad range of theoretical and practical perspectives on the strategy & structure of the global corporate firm.
Specifically, this course is concerned with the different strategy concepts and their applications to the multinational corporation (MNC).
In the first part, we reflect on the challenges managers face when analyzing the competitive environment, strategic position and organizational capabilities. In the second part we analyze, major strategic dilemmas of the MNC, such as global vs. regional strategies, outsourcing and offshoring strategies, in real-life case studies.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

1. A group project 20% of final grade (1-3 persons for one presentation will be held during the period 18.11.2019-22.11.2019). The case study (of an existing company of your choice) has to apply the content of the topics presented in the course (including relevant literature). The presentation should be structured as follows: 1. Overview of the company 2. Application of the conceptual framework presented in the course and/or in the relevant literature. The case study must be handed in one day before 17.11.2019.

2. Individual comment on an article from different relevant articles 20% of final grade. The relevant articles are published on the elearning platform MOODLE under “Literature for the DISCUSSION PAPER”! The summary must be handed and presented 09.12.2019- 1.12.2019.The summary must be handed in one day before 08.12.2019 The summary must be structured as follows:
1. Summary of the author’s arguments (2 pages); 2. Critique: Discuss the strength and weaknesses of the study (1-2 pages).

3. Active participation to in-class discussions on the various case studies used in the class 10% of final grade. Students may be asked to participate if they don't volunteer.

4. Written Exam: (50 % of final grade) – minimum 50 %!

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

For successful completion of the course, a student must secure at least 50% score in the written examination and 75% attendance in the course meetings.

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Aims: The primary goal of this course is to familiarize students with a broad range of theoretical and practical perspectives on the strategy and structure of the global corporate firm. The course is concerned with the different strategy concepts and their applications to the multinational corporation (MNC). It will provide insights into how international businesses effectively operate in the global economy to achieve success. The course will begin with an overview of the international business grounded in the concept of globalisation. It will then examine the (internal and external) environment for international firms at both the micro and the macro level(s). The course will finally probe international firms: their entry modes into international enterprise and their structural and embeddedness issues.

2. Case presentation and discussion

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Written Exam: There will be a comprehensive written exam. To assess the learning accumulated during class discussions. The exam. will constitute of multiple choice questions, True/False questions and one essay question. It would be held on 9.12.2019
Case Study Assignment: Students will work in teams consisting of up to 4 students for this assignment. They will be assigned three comprehensive cases encompassing the dynamics of international firms. They will analyse these cases and would present their own assessment and solution(s) to the issues discussed in these cases while making an appeal to the different theories/phenomena/concepts discussed/debated during the lectures. The students are required to work only on any one of these cases if the group size is up to 2. If the group size were 2+, they would have to opt two of these three cases. The deliverable of this assignment would be 8-10 pages, 11 Times New Roman, single-spaced report for the first/single case. For the 2nd case, at least 5 more pages must be added. Nevertheless, it is not the quantity but the quality of argument that would matter the most during evaluations. The deadline for the report submission (per email) is 30.01.2020 (23:59 CET)
Public Lectures: Public lectures are an integral part of this course. In these lectures, experts from the relevant field of study held discussion on the various topics/aspects relating to the global business. The participation/attendance during these lectures is strongly encouraged, with one bonus point (per public lecture) added to your aggregate score for participation in these lecturers.
