Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This is a graduate course aimed at reviewing the state-of-the art empirical literature on energy and environmental economics. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the latest papers in these matters, as well as to review the empirical methods used in these studies. The course focuses on policy-relevant papers that use both reduced-form and structural IO methods. The course features six main topics: introduction, resource extraction, electricity sector, transportation, land-use, and hard-to-abate sectors. The teaching method will consist on a combination of lectures and student presentations.

The presentation assignment consists of preparing a 75-minute presentation of a recent empirical paper in energy and environmental economics. The presentation should cover the motivation, data, empirical strategy, results, and conclusions of the paper. Students can either make one individual presentation or two presentations in teams of two people.

At the end of each topic, there will be a 10-question multiple choice quiz. Each quiz will cover the material discussed in the lectures and the assigned readings. The quizzes will be conducted in-person during class time. Each student is free to decide which quizes to take. The two highest scores will be considered for the final grade.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Students require a combined grade of 50% or above to pass the course. Fulfilling the presentation assignment is a prerequisite for passing.
