Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Contents: This class provides an introduction to the script and grammar of the Coptic language: nouns, articles, demonstrative pronouns, prepositions, the construction of sentences (adverbial sentence, nominal sentence), verbal forms, etc.... Our "way in" will be the Sahidic dialect of Coptic that was spoken between Oxyrhynchus and Asyut and that became the literary language of Christian Egypt for most of Late Antiquity.Goals: At the end of this class, the students should have a good working knowledge of Coptic and all the necessary skills to read and translate (edited) Coptic texts of simple to intermediate difficulty.Knowledge of ancient Egyptian as well as Greek are useful, but not a prerequisite.
