Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The aim of this course is to introduce students to recent secondary literature on medieval slavery and unfreedom, a topic that has become increasingly popular among historians during the last 25 years. The ancient world was home to numerous societies that relied heavily on slave labor, and the age of European discovery after 1492 similarly created an increased demand for slave labor, especially in the Americas. Medieval Europe, in contrast, has traditionally not been seen by historians as a society that relied heavily on slavery and other unfree forms of labor—with the notable exception of rural serfdom. Recent scholarship, however, has increasingly called this traditional view into question. As historians of medieval Europe have increasingly expanded the study of the Middle Ages by focusing on the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions (to cite only two examples), new perspectives on slavery and unfreedom between ca. 500 and ca. 1500 have emerged. In this course, we will read some of this literature—as well as some of the primary sources on which this literature relies—in order to assess the roles that different forms of slavery and unfreedom played in medieval European society.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Course requirements: 1) short weekly writing assignments based on the weekly readings and 2) participation in weekly classroom discussions.

A student may have 1 unexcused absence. In the case of a 2nd unexcused absence, an additional written assignment is required. A student who misses 3 class sessions can only in exceptional cases receive a positive evaluation in the course.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Grading scale for the course (max. 100 points total): 50% participation in classroom discussions, 50% written assignments.

1 (very good) = 100-90 points
2 (good) = 89-81 points
3 (satisfactory) = 80-71 points
4 (sufficient) = 70-60 points
5 (insufficient) = 59-0 points

Prüfungsstoff

Assessment is continuous over the span of the course.

Literatur

All weekly readings will be made available in Moodle. Weekly readings will average between 25 and 35 pages.
