Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Global history has become a prominent field in the scholarship during the last decades. Its invitation to overcome Eurocentric and methodologically nationalist perspectives, together with a strong sensitivity for spatiality, have opened new ways to look at old and new themes and approaches in historical research. Moreover, the global perspective offers new opportunities for history to enter a dialogue with other disciplines and jointly address broad and relevant societal issues, such as inequalities, migration, globalization and war.

The UE Guided Reading Global History focuses on a selected set of texts with a view to analyzing their specific contributions to the field of global history and reflect on key aspects of the field at large. This will contribute to expanding the participants’ knowledge of theories, methodologies and the scholarship on global history. Moreover, the students will improve their skills in the selection and presentation of scholarly texts, and the analysis of their multiple layers (theoretical, methodological, empirical, stylistic, etc.)

The UE Guided Reading Global History centres on three activities:
• Reading scholarly texts selected by the lecturer, which provide the basis for the exploration of key historical, theoretical and methodological issues in global history.
• Each group of students actively selects two further readings that are relevant in the fields. They present the texts orally during one class and coordinate the related discussion.
• Each student writes one review in which two academic publications are discussed together ("double review").

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The classes will include:
 Plenary and group discussions on the assigned readings.
 Oral presentations of the readings suggested by groups of students, followed by group and plenary discussions.
 Feedback on individual reviews of the double review.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Minimum Requirements and Assessment Standards
• Read the assigned texts (mandatory) – 30%
• Select, present orally and discuss scholarly texts (in group) – 35%
• Write one review of two scholarly texts (“double review”) – 35%
