Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Joan of Arc occupies a singular place in our popular imagination: a peasant girl who led armies, communed with saints, and died a martyr's death. Yet while she seems unique, other figures across history have played similar roles as national martyrs for freedom. This course places Joan at its center while exploring her legacy through comparison with two powerful parallels: American abolitionist John Brown and Indian freedom fighter Laxmibai, Rani of Jhansi.
Rather than relying on traditional readings alone, this course uses immersive classroom roleplaying games to explore these revolutionary lives. Students will step into historical roles, debate pivotal moments, and experience firsthand the complex choices these figures faced. We will complement these games with analysis of popular media portrayals, from films to artwork, examining how these martyrs continue to inspire and challenge us today.

Through comparison across different cultures and time periods, students will gain a clearer understanding of Joan's enduring significance while developing insights into how revolutionary martyrs shape national identity and historical memory.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The majority of assessment comes from written work connected to our classroom roleplaying games: Game-based reflections and position papers (60%). Class participation and other shorter writing assignments (including a short essay synthesizing insights about all three revolutionary martyrs) make up the remaining assessments (40%):

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

To pass this course, students must:

Participate actively in all three classroom games
Complete all game-related writing assignments
Submit the final comparative writing assignment

Grading will prioritize historical understanding, creative engagement with assigned roles, and ability to draw meaningful connections between these revolutionary figures.

Prüfungsstoff

There is no formal examination. Assessment is based entirely on game participation and written assignments that demonstrate understanding of:

Joan of Arc's life, trial, and legacy
John Brown's abolitionist mission and martyrdom
Rani of Jhansi's resistance against colonial rule
How popular media shapes our understanding of revolutionary figures
