Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This course introduces students to the key debates in the field of modern history. It explores key interpretative frameworks and methodological approaches, focusing on questions of identities, representations, imperial legacies and the relevance and irrelevance of nationalism. The course involves discussing book chapters, research articles and primary sources. Particular attention will be paid to how different historiographical traditions shape historical interpretation, and to critically analysing sources.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Students will be assessed based on short written assignments, a presentation, and their contribution to discussions.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Short summaries of the literature with main questions or theses for at least 9 sessions (65% of the final grade).
One oral presentation (20% of the final grade).
Active participation in discussions (15% of the final grade).
Regular attendance (students may miss up to two classes).
