070239 UE Methodenkurs - Theorien und Methoden der Globalgeschichte und der Global Studies (2020W)

The main task of this course is to present an overview of different theoretical approaches, as well as concrete methodological tools used to operationalize research, in global history and global studies. Methodological questions have always been an integral part of critical discussions and self-reflection in these fields of study. What are the strengths and weaknesses of fundamental approaches, such as: “comparison”, “transfers” or “connections”? What are the most recent outcomes of efforts to go beyond Eurocentrism and methodological nationalism? After more than two decades of global studies proliferation, we are now able to assess a great number of concrete research projects, which have made these abstract demands more tangible and empirically tested by employing various research tools. The course will familiarize students with the current theoretical-methodological debates in the field through secondary literature, but also offer them an insight into practical challenges of devising an appropriate research design by inviting scholars currently conducting research in the field of global history as guest speakers.
