Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

We live in a text-based professional culture. Being a historian or social scientist means reading. In addition to historical sources, one must review many journal articles, essays, and books. During this process, it is easy to lose one's bearings. This course is designed to help students manage their reading workload and align it with their research interests.
All participants will introduce their favorite global history book and give a brief overview to the other students. In each unit, we will discuss these presentations, and the discussants will offer helpful suggestions based on the presenter's research question. Moodle (Forum) will coordinate our interactions. Based on available book reviews, each student will prepare three questions. Related considerations and suggestions will be posted in the Moodle student folder and discussed in class.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The professor will provide general feedback throughout the shared learning process.
This course features individual presentations, it requires constant written and oral participation, as well as mutual reliability among participants throughout the semester.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Active participation (50%) and the timely submission of assignments (25%) are essential to passing this course. Presentations make up a limited share of the grading (25%).

Active participation (50%) and the timely submission of assignments (25%) are essential to passing this course. Presentations make up a limited share of the grading (25%).
Some assignments are graded separately, with possible grades ranging from Plus (+) to Zero (0) to Minus (-). If an assignment is not uploaded on time, it counts as a Minus. Delayed submission of weekly assignments is not permitted.
