Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course will provide essential knowledge about opening up research in relation to interdisciplinary studies, especially in the context of Digital Humanities (DH). In particular, the seminar will focus on the web-based data-driven research and project for Open Research/Open Science and discuss the implications of common research cycle from data perspective.

The main topics are:
· Research and data life cycle
· Basics of web technology (HTML, CSS, Javascript, XML etc)
· Metadata management and search engine in relation to resource discovery
· Standards and interoperability
· Data repository
· Digital services useful for research
· Legal issues for data and tool reuse
· Data visualization and presentation
· Data archiving and preservation
· Data-driven research strategies
· Open Data, Open Access, Open Source, Open Research, Open Science
· Application Programming Interface (API)
· Web Analytics

We focus on the overview of Open Research/Science, rather than Digital Humanities itself. As the course deals with a wide range of topics, we will not go into every detail, therefore, it is recommended to later delve into a few topics by yourself to better understand them.

Some parts of the lecture can be technical, but (hands-on) instructions are given, therefore, those who have limited skills are welcome (coding skills are not required).

By the end of this course, the students will be able to think critically about the trend of open research/science, especially in relation to theories and methodologies in DH, and to use the skills and knowledge for various purposes including their own research projects during their studies and/or the management of research projects in their future jobs.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

· Bring your laptop for hands-on exercises
· Good English (English is not the main criteria for assessment, but is required for assignments. It is recommended to improve academic English all the time)

· Basic familiarity with Moodle (of the university)

· Basic understanding of Humanities (and Digital Humanities). We will not discuss Digital Humanities itself in depth, therefore, some pre-reading is recommended.

* Basic knowledge of web technology is advantageous (but not requirement)

30% on attendance and commitment
30% on assignments
40% on the final assignment
