Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The purpose of the course is a critical rethinking of a process that may be regarded central in European history - transition from the traditional to the modern world. The main emphasis is put on a) the changes experienced by the main social structures (family, city, nation,
generation), b) the articulation of these changes in identities, values and myths and c) on the role of wars and revolutions in this transformation. Students will have an opportunity to be acquainted
with the most important academic discussions on each of these topics in the specific historical and cultural context of Eastern Central Europe.

CHARACTER: the course consists basically of lectures followed by the class discussions. The lectures are based on Yaroslav Hrytsak’s book bestselling book "Ukraine: The Forging of a Nation" (2023).

1) basic knowledge of modern Eastern European history;

3) participating in class discussion
4) submitting "take home" paper on a topic chosen together with the
professor

Prüfungsstoff

Students will be asked to choose any topic from their current interests and to write a paper (up to 10 pages) on how it is related to the issues raised in the course. Alternatively, they may write of history of their family (minimum three generations) with a focus on the issues raised in the course.
