Course Description: This course is a conceptually driven introduction to the histories, discourses, theories, and institutions of contemporary art in Vienna. Specifically, it focuses on the pivotal role played by the institution of the gallery and examines the diverse means through which it structures the commercial and non-commercial system of contemporary art.Building on the premise that a constellation of historically contingent processes, perspectives, and practices function together to give rise to what we call "contemporary art," this course: 1) familiarizes students with various galleries in Vienna; 2) presents students with the opportunity to discuss issues relevant to the Vienna art scene with individuals active in the field; 3) Situates the Vienna art scene in the broader global context; 4) critically interrogates the local cultural landscape within available theories. Some questions guiding our course: What is the role played by galleries in mediating the relationship between artistic practices, value, and the market? What are some of the different operational / business models that are prevalent in the field? How do galleries develop a program and establish a local/national/global identity? What is the influence of a gallery on an artist's career and reputation and vice versa? How do galleries position themselves in relation to critics, curators, collectors, and other art world members? What role do galleries play in urban development and gentrification?
