Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This proseminar introduces students to the visual arts of the Italian peninsula between c. 1250 and 1400, a period often framed as a threshold between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. At its centre is the work of Giotto, a painter hailed by contemporaries as a radical innovator. We ask what exactly changed after Giotto, especially how his work reconfigured expectations of what art should communicate and how. Rather than treating him in isolation, however, we examine the conditions - artistic, religious, and economic - that made his work possible. Special attention is given to the achievements of previous and contemporary painters, to the patronage of the Mendicant orders (Franciscans and Dominicans), as well as to artistic and material exchanges with Byzantium and the Islamicate world. Students will be encouraged to question familiar narratives about 'talent', 'tradition' and 'innovation', and to rethink the divide between the Medieval and Renaissance periods.
