Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Which echo remains of a city after moments of rupture - after protests, pandemics, displacement, or collective struggle? What lingers in sounds, silences, rhythms, and everyday acoustic traces? Contemporary cultural science demands the ability to work with sensory, process-based forms of knowledge, and to translate social dynamics- often expressed through sound, silence, and atmospheres - into reflective and practice-oriented formats. This course invites students to approach the city through the key concepts of sound studies, understanding urban life as a soundscape: a socially and culturally produced sonic environment shaped by bodies, infrastructures, power relations, and everyday practices. Drawing on key concepts such as active listening, acoustic territories, and auditory fieldwork, the course introduces sound as a central analytical dimension in European ethnology and cultural anthropology. Through sound walks, active listening exercises, descriptive writing and recording students will learn how sound function as cultural analytic category and ethnographic material. By combining theoretical readings from key concepts of sound studies with practical exercises, the course aims to cultivate a critical, situated, and reflective mode of sensorial perception of the urban space. No practical pre-knowledge is required.

This course assessment is based on continuous participation, engagement with theoretical materials, practical exercises, and an individual sound project with a short reflective text.The final grade will be awarded according to the following criteria:Active participation (regular attendance and informed contribution to class discussions): 20 points
