Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course provides an introduction to late antique and early Christian archaeology. Participants will learn about architecture, archaeology, and material and visual culture, covering such topics as churches, catacombs, sculpture, pilgrimage, monasticism, and much more. It is designed to give students a comprehensive overview of some of the main themes of material and visual culture in this period and to explain how the material world of the late antique Mediterranean differed from earlier Greek and Roman periods.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The course is organised as a weekly lecture with interactive components. Students are encouraged to participate and ask questions. Assessment is made through a final written exam. The STEOP exam will take place together with the "Einführung in die griechische Archäologie" and "Einführung in die römische Archäologie". The exam can be taken in English or German.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The exam will require students to identify, describe, and interpret archaeological material that they have seen during the course. This will include identifying buildings/visual motifs and important components, defining key terms, and describing important ideas and concepts.

Prüfungsstoff

The exam will be based on the material covered during the lectures. Additional revision material will also be provided.
