Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course examines the visual and material culture of the sixth century CE and in particular of the reign of the Emperor Justinian (r. 527-565) and his wife Theodora (r. 527-548). Justinian and Theodora presided over a period of profound change in the ancient Mediterranean. On the one hand, this was a time of intense conquest and conflict, as Justinian tried to reconquer the western part of the Roman Empire, the city of Rome lost its place as the centre of the Mediterranean, and plague ravaged the land from Central Asia to Britain. On the other hand, this was also a period of huge architectural and artistic achievement, seeing the construction of enduring buildings like the Hagia Sophia and the birth of new traditions such as icon painting. In this course, students will follow these changes and learn about urban developments, church building, monasticism and plague archaeology as well as examining intricate works of silver, ivory, and mosaic. Through this visual and material culture, they will also learn how the world changed forever during the reign of one of the most important power couples in history.
