Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The aim of this course is to introduce students to current debates that are shaping the field of Classical Archaeology. As an area of study, Classical Archaeology has changed significantly over the past fifty years and continues to respond to new opportunities and challenges. This relates both to new questions that we are asking about the ancient world and how we can apply developing technologies to our work. Such changes, however, require concentrated critical engagement to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and the unique issues that they present. Each week staff from the University of Vienna and beyond will lead seminars based on their expertise and research interests, allowing students to benefit from a range of skills and knowledge. Sessions will focus on a particular area of interest, including such topics as AI, ancient DNA, gender and sexuality, enslavement, and more. Students will gain a wide awareness of contemporary methods, current debates, and potential future directions for the study of Classical Archaeology. This will allow them to understand how their subject is developing and also show them how their own research could benefit from these methods.
