Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This course studies the shaping of modernism in Greece, by considering how Western European influences are filtered through cultural concerns, the search for a national identity, and the turn towards the East, that gave Greek modernism its distinctive character. The course’s main – albeit not exclusive – focus is the poetry of George Seferis and Odysseas Elytis, which we will read in parallel with works by T.S. Eliot, Seamus Heany, William Butler Yeats, Albert Camus, Charles Baudelaire and others. Cultural and political considerations will intersect with close readings in our approach to poetry and major topics we will discuss include: myth and history in poetry, the transformations of the theory of analogies in modernism, the competing discourses of ancient Greek and Byzantine heritage in the Greek generation of the thirties.
