Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Introduction to the subject of Late Antique and Early Christian Archaeology, of its aims and research methods; in addition to the interpretation of literaray, visual and material sources, economic, and social dynamics.
Content:
The lectures offer an overview of Late Antique and Early Christian Archaeology. They will address the chronological definition, method, and main thematic foci of the discipline from the archaeological perspective. The discussione will consider the formation of Christian space in urban and rural contexts, it will pay specific attention to the aspects of decline of pagan temples, the rise of new religious structures (domus ecclesiae, churches, monasteries, baptisteries etc.), the development of specific burial areas (mausolea, cemeteries and catacombs) and the effects on pilgrimage. It will also consider the aspects of continuity of classical culture, the innovation, and transformation and its impact on material culture, on art and architecture. The geographical horizon will encompass the Mediterranean basin with attention to specific regional case studies.

Written exam at the end.
Please note that the StEOP exam will take place together with the
"Einführung in die griechische Archäologie" and "Einführung in die römische Archäologie".

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The assessment will consider the correct interpretation of various archaeological sources (visual and material) discussed in the lectures.
Students are required to develop the ability to organize knowledge clearly in order to answer exam questions correctly. Minimum vote for positive assessment: 51% of the number of points.
