Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this workshop we will explore a non-standard dramatic form, that of the one-act play. The focus willl be on the aesthics of this type of play, the analysis of several such works for the stage and an attempt to trace a development of the form in the course of the twentieth century. We will discuss a great variety of texts, comic, serious, realistic, absurd, postmodern, political, by such playwrights as St. John Hankin, Harley Granville Barker, Elizabeth Baker, Terence Rattigan, Harold Pinter, James Saunders, Tom Stoppard and Julia Pascal.
After establishing the theoretical parameters of the genre we will study dramatic and theatrical strategies, character construction and thematic concerns. Last but not least we will explore these texts as potential teaching material for schools.
Requirements for credit: regular attendance, active participation in class, one oral presentation, final written exam.
