Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The class will involve building bridges between the language-culture connection and its application to the language classroom in pursuing the goal of developing intercultural communicative competence. In establishing a basis for this, frameworks and concepts of intercultural communication will be presented, and literature on the role of culture in language teaching will be critically analyzed. The approach advocated will be a culture-general approach that develops learners' awareness of the role culture plays in perceptions of contextual variables, linguistic behavior, and negotiation of meaning and identity. Topics to be addressed will include, but not be limited to, the following (all with a view toward pedagogical application):
" Defining intercultural communicative competence
" Cultural orientations and dimensions
" Critical incidents
" Culture and speech acts
" Communication styles
" Nonverbal communication
" Intercultural communication in various domains
" Approaches to culture in language teaching
" Pedagogical activities and tasks

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Completion of reading assignments, response essays, a final written project, and an in-class presentation based on the written project. Attendance is compulsory. Students registering for the class must ensure that they can attend the scheduled class meetings (e.g., June 4, the day after Fronleichnam) and complete the assignments for them.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Students will develop awareness, knowledge, and skills of intercultural communication, be able to critically read relevant literature in the field, and explore ways to apply this to the language classroom.

Prüfungsstoff

Students will be contacted by Professor Meier via e-mail the end of March to provide more information about the course and assign project topics. Thus, students will begin working on their project and do some readings and a response essay before on-site teaching begins. This enables students to have ample time to prepare for their final written and oral project.
