Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

"What can/do we do with words?"

These questions lie at the heart of the study of pragmatics - the study of language as human action in situ.

CONTENTS: Building on the introductory module (STEOP), this proseminar discusses the basics of academic writing and research methodology with the help of hands-on examples from the linguistic study of pragmatics. Students are provided with basic insights into this area as one amongst many fields within the study of language, and are guided through carrying out their first small-scale research project in the area of pragmatics.

In this course, students are made familiar with:
• Selected resources, methods, and basic concepts and problems in the field of pragmatics
• The basic principles and ethics of academic research
• Finding and evaluating academic sources
• The basic conventions of academic writing

AIM: Students are be able to carry out a small-scale empirical research project on a topic in the field of pragmatics. They are able to identify the necessary phases of academic work in this process and to put their academic work into writing (e.g. study proposal, PS paper, poster presentation).

METHODS: Reading, discussions, peer-group interaction, in-class and individual (online) exercises, lecturer input, autonomous research.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Student assessment is based on active participation in class, self-study and online assignments, regular readings, an oral poster presentation, and the PS paper.

For the paper each students will choose one aspect related to pragmatics, explore it in more detail and conduct an empirical study. Further information will be provided in class.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Attendance (max. 2 absences)
Part 1: Class participation, readings, smaller (online) assignments, discussions (f2f, online) etc. 10%
Part 2: Poster presentation in class: 25%
Part 3: Paper proposal: 20%
Part 4: PS paper (3,500 words +/-10%): 45%
All parts (1, 2, 3 and 4) must be completed and at least three out of four parts must be positive. The overall pass mark is 60%.

Grading scale: 1 (sehr gut) 100-90%; 2 (gut) 89-80%; 3 (befriedigend), 79-70%; 4 (genügend) 69-60%; 5 (nicht genügend) 59-0%.

Prüfungsstoff

Course evaluation is based on
- active participation, discussions/online activities, regular readings
- online poster presentation
- on-time submission of PS paper and paper proposal
