Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

How does humor appear in non-fictional and fictional writing? How do personal narratives employ comedy and to what effect? This course will consider these questions in the following primary texts:
the transcript of “Nanette” (2018) by stand-up comic Hannah Gadsby, the one-woman play Fleabag (2019) by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Ali Wong’s letters to her daughters Dear Girls (2019), Tig Notaro’s autobiographical account i’m just a person: my year of death, cancer and epiphany (2017) and a collection of essays by Scaachi Koul entitled One Day We’ll All Be Dead and None of This Will Matter (2017).

In this course students will critically engage with these texts and examine their form in terms of structure, narrative perspective, and style, as well as the themes each authoress touches on in light of larger theoretical contexts. In this vein, we will reflect on the role of ‘funny women writing’ in the literary marketplace and the potential significance of these narratives.

After completing this course students will have gained an understanding of a variety of literary genres (e.g.: life-writing, autobiography, autofiction) and of the role of humor in narratives about or inspired by the personal.

In this course we will touch on the basics of academic writing and research methodology which will allow students to work on a research project, starting out with a reflective essay task and research proposal with an annotated bibliography that will then progress into a final term paper on a topic of their choice related to the material covered in this course.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment will be based on attendance, in-class and online participation, the portfolio and a term paper.
In-class and online participation in general refers to the preparation of the primary and secondary texts, individual contributions as well as work in groups. It also includes expert sessions (each student will be assigned to one session and provide expert input (on readings, key terms) in the respective session) and responses in the form of online posts.
The written portfolio will consist of one reflective essay and the research proposal with an annotated bibliography.
Lastly, students will be required to write a research paper of 3,500 words (+/- 10%). The deadline for this paper will be the 6th of July 2020, 6 pm.
