Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course will give an overview of British Satire between 1660-1750. Taking an historical perspective, we will recognize the events, political leaders, and institutions that stood as perfect targets for satirical commentary, critique, lampooning, and scorn. We will also take note of differences within and across the satire genre, noting how and why these distinctive features were so pronounced during this period.

Course outcomes:
-Students will understand the nature of satire, especially as it was practiced in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
-Students will be able to place satiric texts and authors within Britain's historical and cultural context
-Students will recognize the enduring impact of satire upon the literary traditions that followed thereafter.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Written exam (90 min.)
The benchmark for passing the written exam is at 60%. Marks in %: 1 (very good): 90-100%, 2 (good): 80-89.99%, 3 (satisfactory): 70-79.99%, 4 (pass): 60-69.99%, 5 (fail): 0-59.99%

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The benchmark for passing the written exam is at 60%. Each of the two parts of the exams needs to be > 55%.

Marks in %:
1 (very good): 90-100%
2 (good): 81-89%
3 (satisfactory): 71-80%
4 (pass): 60-70%
5 (fail): 0-59%

Prüfungsstoff

the contents of the lecture, the required primary and secondary reading, and a basic knowledge of literary studies and literary analysis as can be expected at master’s level.

The Broadview Anthology of British Satire, 1660-1750
This will be the text from which we will take our readings throughout the semester. If you are unable to afford the book, I would recommend searching for each text online, as all of them are in the public domain.
