Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The aim of the seminar is for students to get to know ways of analysing picturebooks, especially as concerns the construction of meaning via images, verbal text and design. We will read and discuss current picturebook theories and multimodal methodologies and apply both to a wide range of contemporary picturebooks for readers of all ages. Techniques such as anthropomorphisation will be in the foreground as will the question of representational politics. Students will be assisted in developing a research question and writing a seminar (or bachelor) paper, to be submitted at the end of term.

Attendance is obligatory. Two absences will be excused (no need to let me know in advance, unless you have taken over a presentation or something similar).
Assessment is based on the following:
• A research question and abstract (10 pts)
• An academic paper of 6000 words (8000 for bachelor papers) (55 pts)
• Attendance and active participation in class and at SE conference (15 pts)
• A presentation at the seminar conference (20 pts)If any of these are not handed in or fulfilled at all, you cannot pass this class.
Max. 100 pts; Pass rate: 60%
Grading scale:
100-90 Sehr Gut
91-80 Gut
81-70 Befriedigend
71-60 Genügend
59-0 Nicht Genügend

The materials necessary to prepare presentations and papers will be selected by students and/or provided in the course of the term.

A reading list will be made available on moodle. Course materials will also be provided on moodle in the course of the term.
