Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Contents: The seminar will focus on works of fiction by Irish writers dealing with the national trauma of "the Great Hunger" of the mid 1840s. The novels selected focus on various aspects of the historical, social, moral, political, religious and economic context and address the traumatic aftermath of the "Great Famine" on the Irish people. The historical context will be explored in a special introductory lesson on the basis of recent research and on materials only recently made available from the electronic archives of the 'Great Hunger Museum' at the Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut (http://www.thegreathunger.org). Special aspects of "Irishness" or Irish cultural identity will be discussed in a further introductory unit. The novels selected for in-depth analysis supplying the topics of the students' seminar-papers include Liam O'Flaherty's "Famine" (1937), Joseph O'Connor's "Star of the Sea" (2005), Marita Conlon-McKenna's book for children "Under the Hawthorn Tree" (1990), and a few short stories by 19th c. Irish women writers.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment: regular attendance throughout the semester, active participation in the discussions in class; submission of one seminar paper in English (10,000 words; BA thesis 11,000 words), which must be an authentic work written by the participant individually (no group work!); one PPT presentation (individually or as a member of a group) of about 20 mins per speaker; a final essay (700 words+) to be written in class; deadline for submitting the seminar-paper: strictly at the appointed date (usually one week after the presentation unless otherwise agreed). A feedback will be given within two weeks after submission.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Aims: To familiarize students with the study of different varieties of historical fiction; to advance students'; cross-cultural learning; to provide students with the given historical and cultural contexts; to enhance students' theoretical and practical skills in literary analysis and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of literature; to further develop students' competence in writing research papers; to perfect their proficiency in written and oral English and to further advance their computer-based presentation skills.

Prüfungsstoff

Methods: Interactive teaching, computer-aided presentation; introductory teacher-centred units to provide the historical background and research-databases; interactive student-centred teaching units with students' presentations (PPT) and plenum discussions.

Literatur

Texts: Students are asked to provide private reading copies of the novels "Famine" (1937) by Liam O'Flaherty, "Star of the Sea" (2005) by Joseph O'Connor and "Under the Hawthorn Tree" (1990) by Marita Conlon-McKenna. A 'mastercopy' of the short stories will be put up in the departmental library (FAA) early in October 2012.
