Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this interactive course we will explore a corpus of dramatic texts which deal with the role of woman in society. In late Victorian plays such figures as the fallen woman or the adventuress take centre stage. In the long Edwardian era the interest of dramatists, male and female, begins to focus on 'new women', reflecting the growing emancipation of women. In our analysis of the plays we will consider such issues as structure, character construction, motifs and themes and place the texts in the context of the theatrical landscape and the social and cultural history of the respective period. Participants are introduced to a comparatively neglected yet highly significant and fascinating body of works for the stage on a topical contemporaneous subject. Students will also be familiarised with the social climate of the period with an emphasis on the struggle for gender equality and the empowerment of women.
