Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Teaching Mode: ONSITE, if possible
The first session (6 October 2020) will be online only. Make sure that you can participate via the moodle platform and the tool BigBlueButton.

We'll then re-assess the format of further sessions (onsite, online or hybrid), once we know how many students are on the course and present in Vienna.

Course Topic: "Short and Sweet: Teaching the Contemporary One-Act-Play"

British playwright Steven Berkoff once said: "A one-act play is like a confession, an outpouring to your father confessor. It's usually swift, pungent and to the point, needs few extraneous characters or scene and set changes." This shortness and swiftness makes one-act plays an attractive genre to teach at school, and the variety of topics makes it easy to pick a text that is relevant to your pupils.

In the course, we will read five one-act plays by contemporary British (and one American) authors, published between 2007 and 2019. We will discuss, among other topics:

- What are the specifics of this short dramatic form?
- What are the topics the plays deal with and why do they lend themselves to the short form of the one-act play?
- How do the playwrights work with character and language?
- How do the plays include the audience?
- How can you as a teacher use a one-act play in an EFL classroom?

In our class, we will not only read the plays, we will also engage with them creatively and didactically. This includes, for example, writing your own one-act play and creating a session plan that details how you would teach one of our plays in an actual classroom.

The class also includes the attendance of a performance of one of our plays, Neil LaBute's Wrecks, followed up by a Q&A with the actor and producer.
The performance takes place on 30 November 2020, 7.30pm, at the Theater am Alsergrund (Löblichgasse 5, Vienna). If this is not possible due to COVID-19 restrictions, the performance will be streamed online.
Tickets for this performance will be funded by a grant, so participants will only have to pay 4 Euros for their tickets.
