Concepts of masculinity can be read as ‘a vague set of ideas, demands, stories and images about being a man’ and it seems that contemporary blockbusters are busy telling one story over and over again: that of the (super)heroic male individual.Feminist and Masculinity studies explore the ways in which gender identities are produced, accepted and/or rejected. Every culture, every society creates its own ideas of what it means to be a woman or a man; gender is after all a performative act that constitutes identity. This course will look at the many narrative myths of masculinity embedded in different outlets of popular culture with a special look at the idea of the superhero.Critical readings of masculinities will be based on gender studies, orientalism, psychoanalytical theory, identity studies and theories of agency and articulation.
This course will encourage students to take a critical look at naturalized assumptions about masculinities. Films addressed in class will be scanned for depictions of masculinity they offer to their audiences, their representations of male bodies, male sexuality and male stereotypes.
