Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This survey will outline the history of British literature from its beginnings in the Middle Ages up to our time with an emphasis on major social and political developments. The lectures will include all genres, but a special focus will be on the novel, on drama and on poetry. - Lecture course. tutorial; application of various literary theories and cultural studies approaches; e-learning platform.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Final written test (1 page per answer, coherent texts). - English/English dictionary, primary sources (obligatory texts).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Knowledge of obligatory texts, special terms used in the lecture, and overview of periods, developments, currents and trends in British literary history.

Prüfungsstoff

Introduction to and overview of major trends, tendencies and developments in British literary history and their reflections in canonical works.

Literatur

Analysed texts will be available in form of excerpts on the Moodle platform. Additionally, students are expected to prepare for - and accompany - this survey by an intensive reading of major works dealt with (Shakespeare, "A Midsummer Night's Dream"; Henry Fielding, "Joseph Andrews"; Jane Austen, "Pride and Prejudice"; George Bernard Shaw, "Mrs Warren's Profession"; Joseph Conrad, "Heart of Darkness"; Samuel Beckett, "Waiting for Godot"; Julian Barnes, "Flaubert's Parrot" - these books are also available at the Facultas campus bookstore) and an individual reading of selected chapters from a literary history of their choice - for example, Michael Alexander, "A History of English Literature" (Macmillan pb); Andrew Sanders, "The Short Oxford History of English Literature" (Oxford UP); Ulrich Seeber (ed.), "Englische Literaturgeschichte" (Metzler). Many of the texts discussed may be found in the Norton or the Arnold Anthology of British Literature.
