Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The objectives of this course are to prepare students for the "Schulpraktikum" by focusing on the diverse roles and tasks of the EFL teacher, the basic concepts of CLT, lesson planning, classroom management and practical teaching techniques, as well as observation criteria.

Core Content:
- Teacher's roles
- Language learners and foreign language learning
- Presenting and explaining
- Classroom management, classroom language
- Lesson observation
- Planning lessons
- The communicative classroom
- Teaching vocabulary and listening
- General information on aspects of curricula and syllabuses

Students must observe an experienced English teacher and prepare/carry out a peer teaching sequence.

Methods: lecturer input, discussions, group interaction, observation, peer teaching;

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment is mainly based on a portfolio. The texts are written with reference to the literature read at home and discussed in class as well as the guidelines provided for each task.
- Observation report 9%
- Peer teaching + peer teaching related tasks in portfolio 35%
- School book tasks (CLT, vocabulary, listening) 36%
- Concluding reflection 10%
- Reading, online assignments, glossary, discussions (f2f, online) etc. 10%
Language issues/not complying with formal aspects can lead to deductions of up to -20%

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Minimum requirements: You are expected to
1. observe an experienced English teacher in a self-organised visit to a secondary school/institution of your choice;
2. teach your peers in a short sequence in our course (together with a colleague);
3. hand in a course portfolio;
4. attend classes regularly (max. 2 absences).

The pass mark is 60%.
Grading scheme:
1 (sehr gut): 100-90%
2 (gut): 89-80%
3 (befriedigend): 79-70%
4 (genügend): 69-60%
5 (nicht genügend): 59-0%

Prüfungsstoff

Continuous assessment and portfolio tasks:
- CLT tasks: analyse an information-gap activity and create and analyse an opinion-gap activity,
- select and analyse a listening comprehension task and a vocabulary task,
- plan, perform and reflect upon an own peer teaching micro-session,
- plan a full lesson,
- observe a lesson at an Austrian school and write an observation report,
- do all the reading assignments (see reading list),
- do all the home assignments as given in the sessions,
- participate in the sessions.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment is mainly based on a portfolio. The texts are written with reference to the literature read at home and discussed in class as well as the guidelines provided for each task.

- Observation report 9%
- Peer teaching + peer teaching related tasks in portfolio 35%
- School book tasks (CLT, vocabulary, listening) 36%
- Concluding reflection 10%
- Reading, online assignments, glossary, discussions (f2f, online) etc. 10%

Language issues/not complying with formal aspects can lead to deductions of up to -20%

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Minimum requirements: You are expected to
1. observe an experienced English teacher in a self-organised visit to a secondary school/institution of your choice;
2. teach your peers in a short sequence in our course (together with a colleague);
3. hand in a course portfolio;
4. attend class regularly (max. 2 absences).
The pass mark is 60%.

Grading scheme:
1 (sehr gut): 100-90%
2 (gut): 89-80%
3 (befriedigend): 79-70%
4 (genügend): 69-60%
5 (nicht genügend): 59-0%
