Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course is taught in a team teaching mode, with two separate course components taking place in February/the summer semester focusing respectively on:
1. supporting students during their practice phase (practice coaching)
2. complementary input on relevant ELT areas (materials evaluation and development)

PRACTICE COACHING
The aim of the Practice Coaching component of this is course is to assist and support student teachers during their practice phase (Schulpraxis UF Englisch) with regard to observation techniques, planning tasks, classroom management issues and the evaluation of their observation and teaching experiences.
Core Content: applying theoretical concepts in practice; subject-specific observation techniques; planning EFL language teaching activities and lessons (including the design of home assignment tasks and the application of basic differentiation techniques) professional reflection procedures (individual and collaborative)
Methods: e-learning via Moodle; interactive class with student participation in small-group and all-class discussions of topics related to participants' observation and teaching experiences.The main instrument for observation, reflection and discussion is the EPOSTL - European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages - please make sure you have access to the document in all sessions!
MATERIALS EVALUATION AND DEVELOPMENT
The Materials Evaluation and Development course component aims at providing students with the background knowledge and basic skills required to critically analyse existing language teaching materials, as well as to modify and develop their own activities in accordance with competence-oriented criteria and target group needs.
Core content: Grammar, Vocabulary, Extensive reading, long-term planning
Throughout the course, we will discuss relevant background reading, explore various (schoolbook) materials and activities, and integrate pertinent national and European documents (e.g. national curricula, the CEFR, the ELP), relating them to specific English language teaching contexts.
Methods: A mixture of methods will be employed, including- individual and group activities in and outside of class time, discussions in class, short presentations by the lecturer.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

PRACTICE COACHING
Active participation in all sessions and set tasks, presentation of assignments, work on EPOSTL; Completion of online tasks; 20-minute debriefing session at an individually arranged date towards the end of the semester and presentation of key insights gained during the practice phase. Presentation of complete Practicum Documentation Pack
MATERIALS EVALUATION AND DEVELOPMENT
Course work (active contribution to class activities, regular reading & other assignments, Moodle activities), 2 homework tasks, 2 portfolio tasks.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

PRACTICUM COACHING (40% of course grade)
Assessment: Credits for the course: (40 points in total)
Practicum documentation (incl. 4 observation sheets, favourite lesson plan, key insights): 8 p
Analysis of a teaching sequence: 16 p
Unscrambling EPOSTL descriptors: 4 p
Debriefing session: 8 p
In-class participation (home assignments, discussions, group work, in-class activities): 4 p

Minimum requirements ("zwingend vorgeschriebene Leistungen"):
Regular attendance is mandatory, max. 1 absence in this part of the course! (please bear this in mind when registering)
1. Submit all assignments,
2. Summarize your reflections on your practicum and present your key insights in the debriefing session,
3. Present your Practicum Documentation Pack.
4. Analyse a teaching sequence.

MATERIALS EVALUATION AND DEVELOPMENT (60% of course grade)
Assessment:
1. Course work (reading & class participation) (14pts)
2. Homework tasks (14pts)
3. Portfolio tasks (32pts)

Minimum requirements ("zwingend vorgeschriebene Leistungen"):
- Regular attendance (max. 1 absence in this component)
- Part 3 (portfolio tasks) of the assessment must be positive (min 19pts)
- Overall score for this course component must be positive (min 36pts)

Continuous assessment, details will be given in class and on Moodle (see "Minimum requirements").
MATERIALS EVALUATION AND DEVELOPMENT
Two homework tasks, two portfolio tasks, course work (see "Minimum requirements") based on topics covered in class (see also Ziele, Inhalte und Methode / course schedule). Details on assignments given in class and on Moodle.
