In-person attendance is compulsory in this language course as authentic communication, regular interaction, cooperative learning, and immediate feedback are essential for developing advanced language competence. You may miss up to two classes without consequence. Attendance at the first class of the semester is mandatory.Part 1: Reading circle and book review (35%)
- Reading circle portfolio: A "complete/incomplete" evaluation based on the timely and thorough completion of all core tasks, including literature responses, class discussion leadership, LEAP analysis, book review analysis, and final reflection.
- Skills assessment: A formal evaluation of writing competences, focusing specifically on the book review and analytical justification, which will be graded against a standardized rubric.Part 2: Creative writing portfolio (20%)
- Full submission of all pieces
- Analytic assessment of the revised piece based on the following criteria: literary techniques, originality and imagination, text structure, and linguistic range and accuracyPart 3: Mediation project (45%)
- Group component covering the quality of the proposal, the depth of the genre analysis, the effectiveness of the final mediated text production, and the overall theoretical grounding of the project (35%)
- Individual component covering individual presentation skills: While the presentation is delivered as a team, each student will be graded on their personal ability to communicate complex ideas confidently, structure their segment logically, and engage with the audience effectively. (10%)Conditions for a positive grade:
- All parts (1, 2, and 3) must be completed.
- Two of the three parts must be positive.
- Part 3 must be positive.
- The pass grade is 60% or above.Grading scale:
1 (Sehr gut) 100-90%
2 (Gut) 89-80%
3 (Befriedigend) 79-70%
4 (Genügend) 69-60%

English for Mediation and Creative Expression (EMC) supports MEd students in developing advanced linguistic competence and expressive creativity for educational settings. Students will explore storytelling, narrative design, and stylistic techniques through the production of creative, written, and multimodal texts. They will also build confidence in responding to literature, leading reading circles, and facilitating class discussions. Emphasis is placed on mediating complex texts using creative and narrative mediation strategies suited to specific audiences and purposes, especially in school contexts, with optional integration of AI-supported tools where appropriate. Through close analysis of both literary and non-literary texts, students will deepen their understanding of nuance, tone, and stylistic effect. They will practice conveying complex ideas, emotions, and perspectives creatively, using rhetorical, narrative, and literary devices to adapt or transform texts for different purposes. The course fosters academic discussion skills, interpretive writing, and reflective practice across genres.Students who do not have prior experience with creative writing are supported throughout the class in completing the assignments and overcoming blocks or perceived limitations in creative writing.Aims:
- to develop the ability to use English precisely, flexibly, and creatively at an advanced level
- to deepen understanding of literary texts and explore nuanced language choices, including emotional and aesthetic effects
- to foster skills in responding to literature (both in writing and speaking), facilitating discussions, and leading reading circles
- to develop creative writing skills to produce aesthetic, engaging, coherent, and cohesive storytelling texts
- to build confidence in employing imagination, creativity, and self-expression
- to develop advanced mediation skills by analyzing, reworking, and adapting complex texts across genres and registers for different audiences and purposes, particularly in educational contextsMethods:
