Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course, literary texts from the Netherlands and Flanders (Belgium) serve as a key to discover contemporary culture and society of the Low Countries. Of course, to appreciate a fictional text, one may require some insight in the proper realities from which it originated, as the reader may encounter existing personalities, local places, historic events, and/or cultural traditions. Also, literary texts can exemplify and support narratives about the (national) Self. We will explore the Low Countries touring along various stages and themes throughout the 20th Century, including the Great War, Second World War, Pillarization, Feminism, Migration, Diversity, Populism and Post-colonialism. We will uncover inside perspectives and consider the role of notions like 'cultural memory' and 'imagined community' in discourses about collective national culture.
Aims:
Students familiarize themselves with culture, society, and history of The Low Countries.
Students gain insight in distinctions between Belgium, Flanders, and the Netherlands.
Students can position selected Dutch literary texts in a relevant context.
Students are able to recognize social discourses in selected Dutch literary texts.
