Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course introduces students to the concepts, standards, and languages that underpin the architecture of the Semantic Web, with a particular focus on their application in the field of digital scholarly editing.

We begin with an overview of the key concepts, methods, and languages used in the creation of digital editions. The course then shifts to an introduction to the Semantic Web and its standards. Finally, we explore the intersection of these two domains, examining how Semantic Web technologies have been (and are currently) applied to digital scholarly editions.

Topics covered include:

- Introduction to digital scholarly editing (principles, methods, languages and tools)
- Introduction to XML and the TEI (depending on participants' experience)
- Concepts of knowledge organization and the Semantic Web
- Semantic Web technologies (RDF, RDFS, RDFa, SPARQL)
- Ontologies and knowledge organization systems (SKOS, OWL)
- Case studies and applications of Semantic Web technologies in digital editions

The aim of the course is to provide students with both a solid theoretical foundation and practical, hands-on experience with the main topics covered. Teaching will combine lectures with applied exercises and independent study / home assignments.
There will be a graded quiz (probably in December) to assess the students’ knowledge of the topics covered.

The course is designed as an introduction for beginners, so no specific prerequisites are required. A basic knowledge of XML is desirable but not mandatory.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Course evaluation will consist of a combination of:

in-class participation (15%)
homework assignments (50%)
quiz (15%)
final project (20%)*

*The nature of the final project will be decided in class based on the number of enrolled participants, their level, and their interests, drawing from a set of proposals provided by the instructor.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Regular attendance is strongly encouraged, and active participation is essential for successful completion of the course.
Homework assignments and the final project should be submitted by the specified deadlines (exception must be discussed with the instructor).
