Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Part I General introduction to health and development:
Introduction to Health and Disease: Perspectives on health and disease in different scientific disciplines; dominant health models in global health politics
Historical contexts: Influences of colonialism on health systems; South-North relations and shifting discourses on global health and health security; structural violence and health; social history of 'western medical knowledge' and 'traditional health beliefs'; political economy of health care

Societal & cultural contexts: Interaction of different social, cultural, legal, political and contextual factors (e.g. gender, social status, life style, state health care systems etc.) affecting the health statuses of specific population groups / Case Study: Migrants’ health in Austria

Part II Methodological approaches to investigating health as a societal issue
Utilisation of and reflection on: a) qualitative methods in investigation into health issues (i.e. Biographical Interviews, Focus Groups, etc.), b) the application of these methods in health promotion / Case study from development aid projects

The course provides students with instruction, various forms of feedback and practice on the writing of an academic essay.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Regular attendance to classes
Small written homework assignments and final essay assignment (individual: can be written in German or English and can be chosen from several given optional topics), group work and presentations, participation in class

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The course introduces students to different perspectives on and contexts of health and development in order to establish a common ground to critically analyse and discuss interrelations between health and development. Furthermore students are introduced to selected methods of health research and will learn to appraise these methods in a critical way when applied to actual health promotion interventions.

The course furthermore aims to improve the students' skills in academic (essay) writing thoughout the different stages of preparation and text production.

Prüfungsstoff

The course will be conducted in English
The course uses various forms of interactive learning methods: group discussions, group and individual homework/tasks, group presentations, and discussions based on presentations from lectures. At least one guest lecturer will be invited in order to give the students an opportunity to directly talk and learn from a practitioner in the field of health promotion. Students will learn qualitative research methods by actually practicing them in small groups through field work exercises and during the class. In order to allow common debate all students will be asked to read certain texts or prepare a group homework in preparation of each session.

Instructions an academic (essay) writing and selected feedbacks on homeworks will be presented and discussed in class.
